I’m trying to get factual data/statistics and other information on public schools in lower Westchester County in NY. Anyone know of public (or private) reliable resources. I hear ‘word-of-mouth’ that certain schools are good or excellent, but they sound pretty subjective. I’m looking for actual numbers and data.
Thanks,
Rupak
Try the NYS Department of Education website (www.nysed.gov).
Here’s a link to a page that has school "report cards." That will give you stats (like results of standardized tests, etc.) for each school district, and individual schools within the districts.

My seventh grader is at public school for the first time due to our move, our new area offers no Catholic schools. He is pretty distressed over the lack of discipline, he couldnt hear announcements, and is afraid of being beaten up and having things taken. We did not predispose him to this, we were super upbeat about this (no choice) The school is gorgeous but the discipline isn’t what he is used to. HELP!
First of all, I have been in public schools all my life. Never once have I been beaten up or had things taken from me. From what I do know, Catholic schools are usually very strict when it comes to the children’s behavior. Of course it’s going to be different. But, this will be a learning experience for both you and him. And if it doesn’t work out, you could always try home schooling.
I’ve become friends with this girl at secondary school, but recently her friends have started hating me . She doesn’t really like me and her friends started rumours that i’ve been stalking her . She used to like me and now i dont know what to do. I feel intimidated by her and self concious all the time whenever i’m around her . Please help. Thank You !
forget her, if she’s not standing up for you with her friends and is even making you feel bad around her ditch her.
try talking to other people in your class or start in a new club or something at school – worked for me
if you really want to try again with her, talk to her on your own and not with her friends around but she really doesn’t sound worth it xx
Also, if you know any primary/infant school teachers do you find they tend to have a particular personality type?
Yes you earn more if u teach the core subjects…maths..science..english
Personality type: inside school all happy with smiles
outside of school….plastered when marking papers at home!
I am planning to send my daughter to a boarding school like andover or choate or deerfield next year, and i have heard many positives and negatives.
I know these schools have great academic opportunities, but i wanted to know about some of the social challenges. Are people snobby? Is drug use rampent? Does money play a role in friendships?
This information is truly vital and answers are greatly appreciated.
1. Are people snobby?
Possibly, but I’ve heard that boarding schools endorse diversity and friendship. Especially in schools such as Andover… I’ve heard that if you’re heard talking bad about a fellow classmate you will be sent to the headmaster… if you do something worse, you’re expelled.
2. Is drug use rampant?
Just like any other school, drug use is common. This is an experimental stage and just because they are in boarding school does not mean they have no connections to drug dealers. I’ve heard drugs, drinking, and smoking are pretty common in boarding schools (some more than others) but you shouldn’t worry too much about that affecting your child. They do have supervision and teachers who check on them (advisors).
3. Does money play a role in friendships?
Yes, there are cliques based on money and popularity, but honestly what school isn’t?
I think sending your daughter to boarding school is a wonderful idea. I’m a sophomore and I was very close to going to boarding school (unfortunately I just did not have the money for it) and I regret never getting the chance. Andover seems wonderful. I have a few friends there who absolutely love it! (But of course there are those who do not enjoy the boarding school experience). Educationally it’s great, but make sure this is what you want to do. If you send your daughter, this is basically the last moments of her childhood that you get to spend together. (They do get lengthy breaks and such, but she’ll be off in boarding school, then college, then her own life.)
I have to interview two elementary school children, males, for a project that I’m doing in a class on child psychology. The purpose of the project is to get them to converse so I can analyze how they communicate.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might ask the students? They will probably be around 9 y/o.
Thanks.
ask them if they saw the movie cars, that should take off from there if they both did.
find something they have in common and let them talk about it.
did you go fishing this summer?
do you like football…?
what’s your favorit movie?
things like that.
my son it almost 10 these are some things he and his friends talk about. lol well that and bugs
I am looking to be in the U.S. army as a ranger. What basic high school courses should i take to really be knowledgeable on the field.besides army JROTC.I really just want to be the best at what i do.
I’m in the AF and know some of the SF guys.
They usually stare at maps, and know how to speak a second language.
So my best bet would be for you to be good in map reading, know how to read GPS(not the ones that you have in your car or mom’s car)
Learn how to read MGRS and how to find an area on a map using MGRS.
Math and algebra would be good too, since you need to know distance by not using a measuring tape, this would be helpful when you need to inform somebody about a target that needs to be blown up.
Science and biology would be good too, since you would be out in the field and you should know the difference between a venomous snake and a worm, or plants that would be harmful to you.
Learn another language, especially the ones spoken in your AOR, or where you want to be sent on a mission.
At my middle school, someone stole 17$, a locket, and a white board. Me and 2 other girls I work well with are assigned to solve it. Any suggestions?
it’s kinda hard to find out…give us more details.Maybe you’ll see thw white board at someone and find out more..
I plan on majoring in anthropology in college but I am having trouble finding good anthro schools. I can find lists of schools offering anthropology, but no rankings, so I’m not sure which schools have the best programs.
Can anyone tell me any good schools for majoring in anthro? Or any resources to help me find this information?
First you need to think about what sort of anthropology interests you – cultural, biological, linguistics, or archaeology.
Then start looking at schools that are strong in that area.
As you will be an undergraduate, you might want to consider a prorgram that does not have graduate students – there’s a good chance that you’ll get more attention and be more likely to be taught by full professors. Graduate students can be useful, however, as they often have interests beyond those of professors, may know more about the latest developments, and if you decide to go on to graduate school yourself, might be able to offer you advice.
Look into a few schools that appeal to you, get in touch with the department and ask questions, even if you can’t visit in person. Ask what sort of funding is available for undergrads, if there are internship or other job opportunities in the department, what sort of field work opportunities are available, etc. See if they have a list of regularly offered courses.
If you can, go to a library and look for publications – either monographs or journals – by the professors in the department to get an idea about what they do, how they think, etc.
To be completely frank, while you need a good grounding in the basics in anthropology, most places with a devoted program will be able to offer you that. If you want a career in anthropology you are probably going to need to go on to graduate school, and that’s when you’re really doing to need to worry about rankings, etc.
Some people would say if they had the money, their child would go to a private school, others may say that if you are home schooled that you are sheltered, others says that private school are the best because they think they are more discipline per day others says its the way you raise your child, the way they learn and the type of environment they are in. What do you guys think of all this?
public school.
There’s nothing special about private schoold whatsoever. Yes, they cost a lot but look at the exam reusults. The one near my school did quite frankly, crap.
Home schooling is a waste of time. The child will never be at the same level as the other children no matter how much training the parents do. They’re basically ruining their child’s future.
