I read an article about how some states still allow paddling in their public schools but they didn’t list them. Anyone have a list?

What are the Positive and Negative things about Public school and Home School?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under public school | 21 Comments »

Im 14 and homeschooledand want to go to public school and want to know what is good and bad about both being homeschooled and going to public school…I know one positive thing about Public, you get to be with your friends!!!

Why can’t you spend time with friends and home school? My kids get their school done by lunch usually which frees them up to spend time with friends or do activities they are interested in. They would never have as much time to socialize if they where in public school.

Pros for us are:

Learn at their own rate, usually far ahead if than if they where in school.

Safe and peaceful environment, no bullies or "drama" to distract them from being themselves.

Far more free time, no time wasted dealing with discipline issues, lining up to go places, taking role, ect.

Exposed to real life and a variety of people, not just grouped in a same aged group and being told what to do and when to do it.

The ability to take time off when we choose to.

The ability to participate in extracurricular activities (some WITH the local public schools btw) and volunteering opportunities they wouldn’t have time for otherwise.

I could go on, but I think I got the big ones.

Pros for Public school:
Hummmm….
would be easier I suppose for the parent, no having to plan ect, BUT the trade off is simply not worth it for me.

Question on education in the UK during WW2. Where would a boy go after secondary school once he turned 14?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under secondary school | 3 Comments »

I am working on a story with a friend and I am running into problems involving education. I understand that at eleven they would be attending a secondary school and continue to until the age of fourteen. But what about after? I can’t find anything about further education or universities and their age guidelines during that time.

Also, what was the drafting age for United Kingdom military?

There were three options at that time:

1. Technical schools where they were trained in a trade such as plumbing, welding, etc.

2. Private preparatory schools where they would be trained for university entrance.

3. Went off to work.

The age for Conscription was 18.

Try asking the careers adviser at school. You should have one and he/she should be able to help you. Otherwise maybe child physchology or development?

How important is high school physics for a bio major in college?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under high school | 2 Comments »

I want a biology major in college but I don’t want to take physics in my senior year of high school. Will it make a difference if I don’t take physics in high school?

high school physics are useful for math and engineering majors. furthermore, it is interesting. i loved it so much i took physics 2. i am going into neuroscience, which is centered in biology. it will look good to a college because physics is challenging. but if you dont want it, then dont take it, cause you dont really need it for biology. =)

Is it unethical for a female middle school teacher to provide her personal cell phone number to her students?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under middle school | 18 Comments »

My son middle school teacher had issued out her personal cell phone number to her class in case they need help academically. Is this type of thing professional, or ethical? If not, what measures should I take to correct this behavior?

i personally think it is. as a former police explorer, i had situations where personal information in public places can cause a type of offensive reaction between both parents and teachers, especially when it comes to personal interaction with your own children. my suggestion would be to go to the principal and express your concern over the matter. let him know that even though she may not have any type of intention toward the children, other parents wont see it that way. furthermore, offer some alternative means of communication like her school email address or classroom number as a contact. also, most schools have a voicemail program that will allow teachers to record a long message with information. if that school offers that, ask that she record the weekly assignments on there as well as provide her school email address and some website where they can also seek help. there are many website out there designed for every child of whichever grade level to seek help. hope this helps

How to convince mom to let me switch schools?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under schools | 19 Comments »

Hi!

I’m in 9th grade, & I really want to switch schools. I just moved to my school district from another one close to here, & it’s not that I don’t like my school, because I do, I’m just, tired of it. I’m a gifted student, and my school spent too much money on laptops, so the don’t have a gifted program. The new school I’m planning on going to is near my house, and it has an IB program (international baccalaureate ) that I’m planning on applying to. It also has uniform, and it’s wayyyy safer (and in a way better neighborhood) than mine. I have already told my mom these things, & she is 80% sold. Any other things I can tell her?

Thanks in advance.

As in, the gifted program.

If she is 80% sold, then just ask her when you can switch.

It’s great to hear a teenager actually wanting to be smart and doing something good for them. =)

How can I help my friend cancel this private school year plan?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under private school | 3 Comments »

Okay I have an atheist friend here who attends this private school Madison academy. (A super religious Christian private school) He wants to leave there so badly so he can attend my public school however, he asked his parents if he could leave but, they have told him they already signed him up for a yearly plan. The question here is how can he cancel this gay yearly plan thing?

Note: He has not told his parents about his atheism due to fear of being ridiculed.

The private schools in my area have the parents sign a contract for the next year during the current school year. That way the school knows if they need more students for each grade for next year. Here, the contracts can be broken, but only until June. The schools are confident that they can get new students from their waitlist for the next year in June, but after that, it might get tough. So after June, the parent is stuck paying the whole year, whether the kid goes to the school or not. And they are serious about it! Most private schools have a hard time meeting all their expenses with tuition so it’s important they fill their vacant spots.

So… it seems from your post that his parents would end up having to pay a full year’s tuition, which probably means your friend is SOL. Maybe next year?
