I am writing an English paper on the sex education debate. I believe comprehensive sex education should be taught in public schools (not just abstinence-only), but I can’t think of any more reasons. These are the reasons I have so far:

1. To prevent teen pregnancy and STD’s (by teaching contraceptive methods, etc)
2. To educate students about their bodies and urges

Can you think of any more? I need specific reasons, not just "because abstinence-only doesn’t work."

Also, no matter what, in the world we live in today. Kids will learn about sex at a very young age. So we should educate them now about it. I remember when I was 11 I had a friend who had already slept with 7 guys. I remember my dad wouldn’t let my little sister go on birth control just because she was 14, yet my mom put her on it anyway because wouldn’t you rather be safe then sorry? You can’t just tell your kids that you don’t want them to have sex and expect them to listen to you. They will do it no matter what. So we need to educate them now, and also we need to educate parents that they need to be more aware of what is actually going on these days.

While I know a bit of the history, I was wondering if somebody knew more. Before public education was available, people tended to be educated at home (homeschooled) by their parents or private tutors or they went to private schools, often boarding schools. Public education became available and when schooling wasn’t mandatory, public schools were what the non-rich used. At some point, education became mandatory, but how is it that the public school became the default? Was there an encouragement on the government’s part? Was it the business side of schools that did it? Some other reason?
I wasn’t thinking specifically of American education, but American, Canadian, other places where public school is the default for the masses and anything else is seen as an alternative. For much of the upper class, private schools are still the default, or only option. I guess what I’m looking for is how did the masses come to see public education as THE way to be educated and everything else is an alternative? How come public school is not seen as the alternative to private schools or some form of home education? Is it just a question of money/class systems?
I suppose I should add the church schools in the mix of schools, too!

It just became the easiest way to go, and it was cheaper than other alternatives and allowed both parents to work out of the home. School is only mandatory between the ages of 6 and 16. Kindergarten got started because parents wanted childcare while they were at work, in some states they are now working on k-4 programs for public schools.

I am at college now studying the National Diploma Art and Design. I also study English Literature and English Language at home. I want to become an art teacher at secondary school level, and I was wondering what would be the best approach?
Any input would be helpful at this stage.

You could study an Art degree then do a PGCE after to qualify you as a teacher ) x

We all have problems-kids, teenagers, and adults. What types of issues (social and not) do elementary school aged kids have to face?

Bullying and changing. I remember when I was in elementry school (I had just moved to a new school/house, and my parents were getting a divorce) the girls used to tease me because I was fat. Thats when I developed my first eating disorder. People thought I was weird. Changes for puberty start to happen close to 4-5th grade, which can be akward and confusing. For the younger kids, its mainly bullying and finding friends.

ok, in 2 months and 1 week, im going to be a freshman in high school! i am really nervous! io have a really high self esteem and i don’t care what ppl think of me! i am smart and a bookworm! i know i should do lots of activities and get involved! i wanna do student council, the newspaper, dram club, bad mitten. maybe som other things too! but can anyone give me advice? like what i should look out for?
my #1 rule is don’t date seniors!!!

i’m in high school but not a freshman. just be prepared for about the first 2 weeks of school, cus freshman get picked on A LOT by 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. after awhile they get over it and stop picking on you guys. just some advice, don’t act like a freshman!!! don’t try too hard like the way you dress or act, and don’t be annoying otherwise you’ll just get made fun of. middle school is a lot worse than high school tho ,so if you got through middle school then i’m sure you’ll get through freshman year. it’s really fun they do a lot of fun activities. and you make soo much friends!. btw. most girls get a boyfriend atleast once throughout the year, just don’t sleep with every guy you go out with, cus it’s just stupid. i heard this thing that in high school "you have no privacy once you do something stupid, it’s everyone business!" it’s true rumors fly around and everyone knows everything. so try to stay away from that. goodluck!

Due to the recession, our middle school will be cutting out all middle school sports next year. My school is a very athletic school, and most things are sports centered and sports related. Without them, school won’t be as fun or interesting, and many of the things we normally do won’t happen because without the sports, there will be no reason to have them (Pep rallies, for example). What can we do to convince the state or school system to bring back our middle school sports?

start a petition. make a page that explains why you should have sports and get a LOT of people to sign it. explain on the page about why you think sports benefits you. if you get enough people to sign it im pretty sure they would reconsider getting rid of all sports. GOOD LUCK!

Assuming they have school aged children. And if they don’t, why not? Do you blame them or think they should be part of the solution instead of "opting out" of the system? And isn’t it a little bit hypocritical about talking about fixing the schools and trusting the schools to educate the country’s children when they don’t even use the public school system themselves?

No, I doubt very seriously if the next president of the U.S. will enroll their children in DC public schools. The answer as to why not is because DC public schools are at the bottom of the barrel, and I don’t blame anyone who opts not to allow their children to go to DC schools. It’s not hypocritical to not send one’s children to failing schools.

Nevertheless, the president, other leaders, teachers, and parents should try to fix that school system whether their children attend those schools or not. The future of all children in this country will affect the economy, U.S. world status, etc.

I live in a major city in Illinois and have chosen to homeschool my child, and I ignore all criticism about this choice. I know why I am homeschooling my child, and it is the best choice for my family.

If a family has the resources to send their children to an elite private school, hire private tutors, homeschool, etc., that is their choice. This applies to the president also.

I’m just curious

I have a lot of friends that are home schooled, and a few of them desperately want to go to public school, but their parents won’t let them (for various reasons). Some of the reasons I don’t really understand very well.

So– would you let them go to public school? Why or why not?

Yes, definitely. My kids never wanted to go to public school, but if they had, it would have been their choice.

It is their life, and while I have had more experiences and have my own opinions, it is not my place to choose for them against their will.

I suspect these friends of yours are wanting to go to public school have difficult family relationships.

I’m needing a record that states i was attending school in the year 2000. Back then i was in the fifth grade. Can I possibly get a transcript if I go back to the school? Sadly I lost my elementary school diploma, and I need it to help my dad’s lawyer with his issues.

. Did you keep a copy of your report card by any chance, That might be proof enough. What usually happens is , your records follow you where ever you go. So say you moved to another district, the original district/school sends all of your records to the new district, so in your school file, you should have records of every school you attended. You might want to contact the last school district and tell them what you need, They should have records of all of your information,

dont you agree high school is the most horrible experience? today was the first day for me and i had the most boring time ever. i hope it gets better…..

anyway what are your opinions on high school? so far i hate it, but what about you?
