First of all, I have been in public schools all my life. Never once have I been beaten up or had things taken from me. From what I do know, Catholic schools are usually very strict when it comes to the children's behavior. Of course it's going to be different. But, this will be a learning experience for both you and him. And if it doesn't work out, you could always try home schooling.
References :
In all my 10 years of going to public school, I never saw anyone get beat up or bullied. It's just some conspiracy that they want people to believe.
References :
haha, I was studying in catholic school since grade 1 to grade 6
i transfered to a public school in year 7 as well !!! I am now in year 11..
to tell you the truth, it really is a shocking to me, the discipline...you see kids in my school beating each other and teachers dont give a crap, sometimes teachers dont care if you're not doing your work, sometimes teacher spoon feed you to the point that he tells you the answers to the exam so he wont have to teach... it really is shocking...
in my previous catholic school, im a pretty average kid on grades, but when i got transfered im amazed how smart i am compared to my classmates.... after a year, you'l get used to everything, heck even my grades became just like my old dumb classmates...i got a normal band of friends here, its all good, but if I were to choose, i'd choose to stay in a catholic school

Realize that you cannot provide a Catholic world for him in life. This may be good preparation for the rest of his life. Encourage him that while some of the other students may act out you still expect him to be respectful to his teachers and other students. Unless he disrespect others he is unlikely to be attacked.

If you don't over react, your son will soon adjust.
References :
i made the the transition from roman catholic to private.

my parent made no effort what so ever to help me adjust.

the system is rougher for sure.

i would have wanted to have a party so I could make new friends.

i beat up the school bullie so I was "respected".
after that it was no problem.

I loved that i didn't have to find my uniform in the mornings !
