How do I take my child out of public schools to homeschool in alabama?

Posted by admin on February 4th, 2010 and filed under public schools | 5 Comments »

We live in shelby county.
She started kindergarten in august and I’ve decided that I would rather homeschool her. How do I go about taking her out of public schools?

Go to the HSLDA website page for homeschooling legally in Alabama, which I’ve attached, to learn what you need to do in your state.

Join a Yahoo Group for Alabama Homeschoolers. Families there can give you more details on what to do and point you in the direction of a local group where you can meet families in person.

Withdraw your daughter according to Alabama law and get started homeschooling.

I’ve included some other web sites that are also very helpful.

Check the Yahoo Groups, there are a lot of homeschooler groups. The people on these sites could get you started quickly.

The primary focus of kindergarten is reading education. Learn all you can about teaching reading. You don’t want to blow it!!!!

Alabama is one of the few states that prohibits homeschooling. However, there is a way around that. One way is if you are a teacher already, you can be your daughter’s tutor. But if you are not a teacher, you will need to enroll her in an umbrella, or cover school. Basically that will be an organization that qualifies as a school for the state, and usually you just use approved curriculum and submit her work to them, but each one varies just a little. If you go to the following web site, you will find a list of umbrella schools. Once you enroll her in the umbrella school, they will walk you through the process of removing her from public school.

You have received some good advice from the person who placed the links ahead of me.

This is a link to Covenant Academy in Montgomery, AL. You can get all the forms to enroll in Covenant Academy and more information on the website.

    Best wishes for your success.

You have to get setup with a homeschool program first and once you get setup with them you can take her out of the public school…and home schooling is legal and allowed in Alabama.
